Immortals Pulls Off a Godly Box Office Victory
While many in the industry (including ComingSoon.net’s Weekend Warrior) thought that DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots had a chance at pulling a threepeat, both new movies fared better with Tarsem Singh’s Greek Gods war epic Immortalscoming out on top with an estimated $ 32 million. Starring Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz and John Hurt, the movie which had transitioned over from Rogue Pictures opened strong on Veteran’s Day Friday with $ 15 million (including $ 1.4 million on Thursday at midnight) then tailed off over the weekend. It still has a long way to go before it makes back its reported $ 75 million production budget
Second place may be too close to call but for now, Adam Sandler’s cross-dressing PG comedy Jack and Jill is claiming it with an estimated $ 26 million in 3,438 theaters, averaging $ 7,500 per site.
Puss in Boots came in a close third with an estimated $ 25.5 million, down less than 30% in its third weekend, with a total gross of $ 108.8 million. It could eventually get to the $ 150 million mark of last year’s Megamind although it has a lot of family competition over the next couple weeks.
Brett Ratner’s action-comedy Tower Heist (Universal), starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, dropped to fourth place with $ 13.2 million and $ 44 million total.
Opening in fifth place, Clint Eastwood’s biopic J. Edgar (Warner Bros.), starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the former FBI director took in roughly $ 11.5 million this weekend in 1,910 theaters after opening in select cities on Wednesday.
The R-rated comedy A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (New Line/Warner Bros.) dropped three places to sixth, down 54% from last week to bring in $ 5.9 million with $ 23.2 million total.
Justin Timberlake- Amanda Seyfried’s sci-fi thriller In Time (20th Century Fox) took seventh place with $ 4.1 million to bring its total to $ 30.7 million.
Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 3 was in eighth place with $ 3.6 million as it joins Puss in Bootsin this year’s $ 100 Million Club, while Craig Brewer’s remake of Footloose, also from Paramount, fell to ninth with $ 2.7 million and nearly $ 49 million total.
Rounding out the Top 10 was Shawn Levy’s action-adventure Real Steel (DreamWorks), starring Hugh Jackman, with $ 2 million and $ 81.8 million total.
The Top 10 grossed around $ 127 million which was actually up 15% from the same weekend last year when DreamWorks Animations’ Megamind won for a second week in a row with $ 29 million followed by Tony Scott and Denzel Washington’s Unstoppable (20th Century Fox) with $ 22.7 million.
Opening in select cities, Werner Herzog’s new doc Into the Abyss (IFC Films) brought in $ 50.8 thousand in 12 theaters, averaging roughly $ 4,200 per location.
