‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’: Angelina Jolie’s Directorial Debut Will Hit US Theaters With Subtitles

If you head to see ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ this December, bring your reading glasses. According to Deadline, Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut about the Bosnian War in the mid-’90s will hit theaters in the country’s native language. Known as Serbian-Croatian during the war, the language is now called Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian; Jolie shot the ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ in both BCS and English in order to reach a wider audience, but felt the film lost authenticity. “I’m honored that FilmDistrict has chosen to release the film in the United States in the original language version,” Jolie said in a statement. “It was always my hope that U.S. audiences would have the opportunity to experience this version.”

Said FilmDistrict president Bob Berney, “It’s an arthouse release and it’s more authentic. The actors and the performances have a subtlety in their native language. They pull it off in English, but it just makes more sense [in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian]. It feels right.”

FilmDistrict will release Jolie’s somewhat controversial directorial debut in limited release on Dec. 23.
