J.K. Rowling Says the 'Fantastic Beasts' Franchise Will Extend from Three Movies to F…
We know you’re excited to return to the Wizarding World first introduced to us by Harry Potter when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters next month, but just how excited are you? Are you five movies-worth excited?
Originally thought to be a new trilogy set years before the Harry Potter movies, creator J.K. Rowling announced during a fan event for the first Fantastic Beasts movie that they’ve instead decided to extend it to five movies. The first three, due out in 2016, 2018 and 2020, will likely be joined by two additional films in 2022 and 2024, unless production on multiple films is combined in a way that allows them to release, say, the final two movies one year apart.

Whatever the case, you’ve got five movies to look forward to now — a pretty bold bet on the studio’s part considering the first Fantastic Beasts doesn’t arrive in theaters until November 18. But five movies may feel like not enough should these new characters like Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander catch on, plus chances are strong they’ll bring in other fan favorites from the Potter movies (most notably Dumbledore), too. Considering Scamander lived many years, with his retirement not beginning till the start of the Harry Potter story, they can stretch this sucker out in a number of ways — maybe even ways that cross over with Potter’s own journey.
The big question is whether a big-screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is part of this plan in some way, and they’re just not revealing it yet. That we don’t know, though from the official tweet above it seems like it’s all related to Fantastic Beasts. Guess we’ll see.

Do you think there’s enough material in Scamander’s story for five movies?
