Jimmy Fallon goes for Trump redemption with Golden Globes monologue

Jimmy Fallon finally got his Donald Trump do-over. Indeed, most of Hollywood was able to rest easy on Sunday night as Fallon took the stage to kickoff the 2017 Golden Globe Awards. A few good-natured barbs directed toward his famous friends aside, Jimmy used the bulk of his Globes first act to go rapid fire on the PEOTUS.

It was back in September, during Trump’s run for the White House, when the now-president-elect got his hair all messed up on the “Tonight Show” and boy, wasn’t that silly?! Fallon took heat for what many said was “normalizing” the reality TV star-turned-about-to-be-leader-of-the-free-world.

So on Sunday, perhaps in effort to prove he could do more than mess with the man’s coif, Fallon fought through a broken teleprompter to deliver a slew of one-liners aimed at Trump:

  • “This is the Golden Globes,” Fallon stated early on, “one of the few places left where America still honors the popular vote.”
  • In reference to “Game of Thrones” and the upcoming inauguration: “A lot of people are wondering what it would have been like if King Joffrey had lived. Well, in 12 days we’re going to find out.”
  • When speaking of Meryl Streep’s nominated performance in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” Fallon described her as “the world’s worst opera singer… and even she turned down performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration.”
  • When it came time for Fallon to reference the company in charge of tabulating the night’s ballots, he threw in another jab by calling it, “Ernst & Young & Putin.”
  • Throwing a nice punctuation mark on the whole thing, Fallon made reference not just to Trump but to the tumultuous year that was, saying, “You might remember ‘Manchester by the Sea’ as being the only thing from 2016 that was more depressing than 2016.”

We anxiously await Trump’s response, once he’s free from all those darn intelligence briefings — after all, TV is what’s most important.
