Kevin Kline Lines Up Crazy Dual Role in Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Frank or Francis’

The last film screenwriter Charlie Kaufman directed was the bananas ‘Synecdoche, New York.’ Judging from some newly revealed plot details, ‘Frank or Francis’ — his second directorial effort — may be just as bananas. First, some casting: Variety reports that Kevin Kline has joined the previously attached Steve Carell, Jack Black an Nicolas Cage in the film, which follows an online film blogger and his antagonistic relationship with a hack filmmaker. Kline will play a Richard Waller, the brother of famous fictional filmmaker Jonathan Waller, as well as Richard’s Head. Who’s Richard’s Head? Per Variety, “an animatronic head that, through the use of advanced screenwriting techniques, helps Jonathan develop a completely inoffensive product that will have the broadest possible appeal and zero artistic integrity.” OK, then!

As for the rest of the cast, Black is attached to play the blogger, with Carell as the director and Cage as an actor famous for films like ‘Fat Dad.’
