Mike’s trade finalized — just as the relationship with Ginny reaches fever ‘Pitch’

The “Is Mike Lawson going to be traded or not?” question has weighed heavy over “Pitch” for the past few episodes, and a decision was finally made Thursday (Dec. 1). While the waiting game is similar to how MLB trade rumors fly in real life — impossible to gauge, lingering over indecision and suspense until the very last second — whether or not Mike (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) would leave Ginny Baker (Kylie Danbury) and the San Diego Padres was a little frustrating, since we assumed it was never going to happen.

The episode, “Scratched,” tried its best to lead viewers on to think that Mike would be heading to the Chicago Cubs — a fun idea since that’s the team who just won the World Series in real life — and thus one of the only reasons Mike might actually leave the Padres. But Mike’s the star of the show! Come on! Our ruggedly handsome, bearded Zach Morris was not being traded anywhere.

It’s super unlikely the Padres will make it to the playoffs — even if they technically have a numerical chance to win the wild card slot — but Mike understandably didn’t want to leave his team of 15 years. San Diego is his home. The fans love him. And apparently, he also didn’t want to leave Ginny.

Mike and Ginny were this close to having their first kiss, before Mike got the call from Oscar that he’d be staying in San Diego. The immediate reaction from both Ginny and Mike while standing outside Boardners — side note: Boardners is a real dive bar in Los Angeles, and a solid one at that, imo — was not excitement. They didn’t hug, they didn’t get back to their romantic kiss moment.

They both realized in that moment that nothing had changed: Oh crap. We are still going to be teammates and we can’t do this.

It is very upsetting! For so many reasons! But let’s be real: These two can’t be together.

First of all, the timing is way off. Mike’s not ready to be in a serious relationship. Ginny has a ton of emotional maturing to do before being able to handle both a boyfriend and her meteoric rise to superstardom. She can barely handle the spotlight on her baseball career!

And if the tabloids got word of her and Mike’s relationship — which they definitely would, and are probably already inventing from whole cloth — it would tear them apart even quicker, and alienate the rest of the team. Aside from it happening too soon from a writing standpoint for the series in general, if Mike and Ginny get romantically involved now, it will end in disaster. And they both deserve so, so much better.

The season finale of “Pitch” airs Thursday, Dec. 8, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
