Moviefone’s New Release Pick of the Week
“Prometheus”
What’s It About? Ridley Scott returns to the world of “Alien” with an epic prequel about mankind’s first contact with a mysterious alien race who may or may not be our makers, and may or may not have sinister purposes.
See It Because: “Prometheus” pulled off a rare feat, adding a new layer of intrigue to the rich mythology of the “Alien” series. Not since “Inception” has a summer blockbuster come along with such audacious head-scratching concepts. And despite being filled with plot holes, it was still fun to argue about the film’s big questions. Also, the always brilliant Michael Fassbender was terrific as David, an android servant with T.E. Lawrence-sized dreams of exploration.

Moviefone’s Blu-ray Pick of the Week
“E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial”
What’s It About? Steven Spielberg’s classic tale of an alien lost in the suburbs premiers on Blu-ray for the first time, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
See It Because: The new edition gets a hi-def upgrade overseen by none other than Spielberg himself, and the set comes packed with all-new special features looking back at the behind-the-scenes story.

New on DVD and Blu-ray
“The Barrens”
What’s It About? Darren Lynn Bousman of the “Saw” franchise directs his newest horror movie about a family that is terrorized in the New Jersey Pine Barrens by the Jersey Devil of folklore. The end result is predictable horror schlock.

(Also Available on Netflix)

“A Cat in Paris”
What’s It About? The surprise Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature, concerning a secretive cat who leads a double-life with a charming jewel thief and a little girl who recently lost her father is charming, jazzy and noirish. Sample some international animation that isn’t of the Dreamworks variety.
See It or Skip It: See it.
(Also Available on Netflix)

“The Cottage”
What’s It About? There was already a movie called “The Cottage” back in 2008, but that one didn’t have David Arquette.
See It or Skip It: Skip it.
(Also Available on Netflix)

“The Courier”
What’s It About? Jefferey Dean Morgan and Mickey Rourke star as blah blah blah in a generically-titled action movie.
See It or Skip It: Skip it.
(Also Available on Netflix)

“The Raven”
What’s It About? Edgar Allen Poe is on the hunt for a serial killer that silences his victims in the fashion of the author’s macabre stories. Even with John Cusack, this is a straight-up “RDJ as Sherlock Holmes” copycat.
See It or Skip It: Skip it.

“Shut Up and Play the Hits”
What’s It About? A documentary account of the break-up of LCD Soundsystem, the dance rock trend-setters who called it quits with Madison Square Garden farewell show at the height of the success, is akin to a modern “The Last Waltz.”
