Online pranksters are upping the ante in their quest to rid the Music World of Justin Bieber.
Biebs is a manboy of the people, so it’s only fitting that he’s decided to let his legion of devoted — if not obsessed — fans select the country he should visit on his next world tour.
As part of his “My World Tour,” the teen pop sensation allowed fans to spend the past week voting for the countries that should be included on his itinerary. However, the online contest to decide where the Canadian pop star should go on tour next was hijacked by a Web prank group that has been encouraging voters to send the 16-year-old to North Korea.
With just a few hours left to vote, North Korea was the top vote-getter in the “My World Tour” contest on Tuesdaym, with more than 625,000 votes, followed by Israel with 608,000 votes and Poland with 513,073 votes, according to the BBC.
The campaign to garner votes for an unlikely Biebs Tour to the notoriously isolated communist nation of North Korea was launched by users of the Internet bulletin board 4chan. And boy do they hate that Bieber!
Users of 4chan have carried out a number of stunts in the past; including getting site founder Christopher Poole, on Time Magazine’s 2009 list of the world’s 100 Most Influential People and sending pizza to the home of Balloon Boy. But the web wisenheimers have taken a particular joy in torturing Bieber.
On June 13, members of 4chan’s message board were asked to, “Go to Google and search ‘Justin Bieber Syphillis.’ Let’s get this to be No. 1 searched phrased on Google trends.” By midnight, “Justin Bieber Syphillis” was at the top of Google’s “Hot Searches.” Earlier this week, Bieber fans found themselves at the center of an attack on their Banged Messiah after Justin’s YouTube videos were hacked and redirected to adult websites.
Last week, the 4chan website’s notoriously puckish /b/ message board members posted invites and even a detailed mission plan to make this prank a reality.
In fact, as we speak, “Justin Bieber Hates Koreans” is the No. 1 most-searched phrase in America.
