Paramount Drops 'God Particle' From Its Calendar and Mysteriously Adds An Imax '…
It was a pleasant surprise for fans when Bad Robot revealed that an under-the-radar thriller it had been making, Valencia, was actually 10 Cloverfield Lane. They waited about eight weeks before the film was set to hit theaters to make the announcement and in turn rode a huge wave of anticipation to great box office success. Of course everyone instantly started to wonder if Bad Robot had other secret Cloverfields in the works. Immediately all signs pointed to God Particle.
When it was announced back in 2012, God Particle was said to be about astronauts on a space station who receive the shock of their lives when Earth suddenly disappears. The movie, directed by Julius Onah, went into production earlier this year with David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd starring. At the end of October an unofficial report emerged claiming that God Particle was indeed a Cloverfield movie.
But the story doesn’t end there. Star Gugu Mbatha-Raw was asked about the Cloverfield connection and told Screen Crush it was news to her and that when she made it, it was just “a total standalone sci-fi, space thriller.”
This is where it’s worth mentioning that when Mary Elizabeth Winstead first boarded Valencia, it also wasn’t a Cloverfield movie. The change happened later when Bad Robot figured out a way to make it a Cloverfield movie. And so that brings us to today, with news that God Particle, which was supposed to hit theaters on February 24, 2017, has been pulled off of Paramount’s release schedule. Coincidentally, an untitled new Cloverfield movie was announced for an Imax release on October 27, 2017.
Bad Robot still hasn’t officially said that God Particle is a Cloverfield movie, but at this point it’s getting harder and harder to deny all the signs. Either way, we’re getting a new entry in the Cloverfield cinematic universe next year, and that’s exciting. Now we just need to find out if it is indeed God Particle or perhaps another one of the secrets from J.J. Abrams’ mystery box.
