In his new autobiography, Rick Springfield reveals that before his first monster hit, Jessie’s Girl, he was an unhappy, misunderstood teen, desperate to end his life. On the pages of Late, Late at Night — arriving from Simon & Schuester early next year — the ’80s sudster-turned-crooner opens up in grim detail about a failed attempt to take his own life. Rick, then 17, says he was so depressed and tortured because he felt he was ugly that he was nearly driven to suicide.

According to The New York Post, Springfield wrote “that he tried to hang himself at age 17 when he felt as ugly as the ass end of a female baboon at mating season. He hung for about 20 seconds from a ceiling beam but miraculously, the noose undid itself. ‘From this point on, music will become my salvation and save me from.’”
