Side-splitting British comic Ricky Gervais has supposedly been invited to trade barbs with Hollywood’s elite as host of the 2012 Golden Globe Awards — this despite a firestorm of controversy over Gervais’ biting commentary at last month’s ceremony

The British funnyman says that in spite of his controversial routine — which saw him poke fun at Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Hefner, and even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which produces the Globes — organizers would love for him to preside over the awards show for a third time.

“The ratings went up again, and the organizers asked me to consider a third year. I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure. You know me. Two seasons is enough,” the Office creator tells Heat Magazine.

Ricky, 49, doesn’t think he went too far with his jokes and is still a bit baffled by the public outrage his candor stirred.

“I did exactly what I went to do: improve on last year’s and have a laugh. The response was staggering. It was discussed on every news channel and chat show for weeks,” he recalls. “The weird thing is, the question is always, ‘Did Ricky go too far?’ And the answer is always, ‘No’. I have yet to find anyone who was actually offended by it.”
