Tyra Banks isn’t the only big name buzzing around the campus of Harvard University these days. The student body at America’s oldest and most-respected institution of higher learning have selected hip-shaking humanitarian Shakira as their 2011 Harvard University Artist of the Year.
The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer will be presented with a trophy at Harvard’s annual Cultural Rhythms Ceremony in Cambridge on Saturday. Shakira’s arsenal of hits — like “She Wolf” and “Waka Waka” — and her work to bring equal access to a quality education to children all over the world made the star a shoe-in for the honor, says S. Allen Counter, director of The Harvard Foundation.
“The students and faculty of the Harvard Foundation are honored to present multiplatinum artist Shakira with the 2011 Artist of the Year award. Her contributions to music and distinguished history of creativity have been applauded by people throughout the world, and she is greatly admired worldwide for her humanitarian efforts through her Barefoot Foundation.”
