A nine-year-old girl had a dream come true when she threw out the first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays MLB game on Thursday, but it was what happened afterwards that was really a dream come true.

Alayna Adams‘s father — an Afghanistan soldier who hasn’t seen his family in a year because he’s been serving — was disguised behind the plate as the catcher.

After William Adams caught the ball he took off his mask to reveal his face and Alayna rushed home plate to leap into his arms.

Before throwing the pitch the crowd and Adams family was shown a video message from William making it look like he was still in Afghanistan, so when it was revealed he was the catcher, the crowd erupted in applause and cheering.

“For a second, I felt like it was a dream,” Alayna said.

Her mother Dana was equally as surprised and told Fox Sports, “I had no idea, and usually I pick up on things.”

“Can’t believe I’m finally back with the girls when there are still so many servicemen overseas,” William said. “I was pretty excited.”

The surprise was made possible by the United Service Organizations Inc., a non-profit dedicated to United States troops and their families.
