Ajmal Amir Kasab, the only surviving terrorist in 26/11 Mumbai attack who has been sentenced to hang till death by the special court in Mumbai today will now appeal in Supreme Court and will need the India’s president’s assent in order to have mercy petition..
The final action may take long years as before Kasab there are at least 50 people who are waiting for presidential assent.
Kasab has been charged under numerous charges of terrorism under the India’s latest anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 2004 and thus he will make appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the special court verdict.
Now in case the apex court takes decision favoring the death sentence then Kasab can seek a review of the verdict. And if the apex court decides against Kasab then he will be free to approach the President of India asking for a mercy petition to lessen his death sentence into life under Article 72 of the constitution.
