‘Star Trek 2’ Release Date: Paramount Lands ‘Trek’ Sequel on May 17, 2013

Holding your breath for ‘Star Trek 2?’ You’ll have to hold it for nearly another year. The sci-fi sequel was originally slated for a June 29, 2012 release, but has just been bumped back to May 17, 2013 where it will take the spot vacated by Roland Emmerich’s ‘Singularity,’ which moves to November 2013. The entire cast is set to return for the sequel, which will be shot in 3D. J.J. Abrams, who’s co-writing the follow-up to his 2009 reboot, was too busy with ‘Super 8’ to hit the original deadline; the June 2012 slot now goes to ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation.’

The apparently flexible deals for the cast — including stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto — allowed Paramount to wait until Abrams and his writers were ready to begin work on the second go-round of the Enterprise crew.

The studio is obviously hoping for another hit: The revamped ‘Star Trek’ earned $ 258 million in North America and $ 130 million internationally.
