Supergirl’ EP: Don’t give up all hope on Kara & James together just yet
“Supergirl” Season 2 finally made its premiere Monday (Oct. 10), and not only did we find out who’s in the pod (Chris Wood from “Vampire Diaries” and “Containment”!) and Kara’s new job at CatCo (reporter!), but her very famous cousin Superman dropped by to help her kick butt in National City. And even if Kal-El (Tyler Hoechlin) doesn’t quite see eye to eye with DEO Head J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood), he is truly a delightful addition to have around.

Screener got to speak with executive producer Ali Adler about all the surprises in the Season 2 premiere and what audiences can look forward to seeing next on “Supergirl.” While we were very worried about Cat Grant, and the absence of such a powerful female character, Adler promises a slew of strong women will soon be joining the series. She also discusses the highly anticipated crossover with “The Flash,” Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) relationship status, and when Mon-El will wake up …
“Don’t worry,” she assures us. “No one is going to make you wait too long to see Chris Wood.” Thank God!
How did you decide the exact situation to bring back Superman?
It became an issue of necessity. There was a dangerous situation that required him to come to National City to handle a situation with Supergirl. We wanted to tell the story, obviously, for a very long time –but it’s still Supergirl’s show, and her point of view.
He’s so friendly! It’s a breath of fresh air to not have such a dark-natured Superman…
Well, I think we are so inspired by Christopher Reeve’s “Superman” — Tyler just brought that same kind of good-natured, amiable, adorable [quality] to this Superman.
Will we see Lois Lane on ‘Supergirl’?
Not immediately. But we have the DC canon to work with, and we’ll take them all eventually.
Will the future 4-way crossover episode be understandable if you don’t watch ‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash,’ and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’?
Absolutely. One hundred percent.
With Cat Grant’s character in the picture less, Kara’s future boss Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez) being a guy, and the addition of Superman, will there be new powerful female characters joining the series?
I am excited about the many females coming in! Just in the beginning, we have Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor, Fioriana Lima will be Maggie Sawyer, Brenda Strong is coming in — I can’t discuss her role too much — but she’s an amazing, strong woman. The coolest woman is coming, President Marsden, played by Lynda Carter herself. We have Sharon Leal coming in as Miss Martian who we will explore more in the season. So for every time Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) is not on our stage, we have five women coming in. The women don’t stop!
The decision to not have James and Kara’s relationship move forward … why?!
It’s Supergirl and I’m still interested in seeing her work as a professional person, or as a superhero, before we see her spending her time ensconced in a relationship. I think that’s evolution we’d like to see later in the season, but … she’s starting this new job — and as a young woman in the workforce, and being the most powerful woman on Earth, we wanted to see her explore other areas first.
You can have everything, but for narrative purposes, it’s more interesting to see her be badass in other areas first.
Will Mon-El (Chris Wood) be a possible love interest?
I think when any handsome guy drops into your backyard, that’s always a question — I wouldn’t want to say one way or another. What were proud of with exploring the character of Mon-El is [that] when Kara came to Earth, she had to go through that fish-out-of-water time, and I was always bummed we didn’t get to see that. So Kara will lead him on this journey of popular culture… Like, What is “a bird?” He doesn’t know anything! Kara gets to be the voice experience, and it’s fun to watch.
“Supergirl” airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
