‘Supernatural’ finally addresses the psychic elephant in the room

It’s been roughly seven seasons since we’ve heard anything about Sam Winchester’s (Jared Padalecki) psychic powers and honestly, we kind of forgot about that aspect of Moose’s personality altogether.

If you’ll recall, when Sam was an infant, he was fed the blood of a demon named Azazel, which resulted in some pretty epic abilities. It was an interesting detail about the Winchester brother. Yet, after the end of the show’s original five-season arc, it felt like this important aspect of Sam’s character up and disappeared.

When Season 12 premiered, one of the details that stood out to us were the random visions Sam was experiencing while held prisoner by the Men of Letters. Finally, in Thursday’s (Nov. 3) episode, titled “American Nightmare,” the series did its best to remind everyone that Sam Winchester is still a psychic… Maybe.

After heading to investigate two odd deaths, involving stigmata and whip lashings, Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles) find themselves in the house of a family who subscribes to the power of God’s will over modern medicine. Living off the grid is one thing, but we soon find out that the Petersons are hiding a dark secret: They keep their devil daughter locked up in the basement.

Conveniently enough, Sam is found snooping on the property and gets taken prisoner. In the basement he goes, where he soon discovers the poor girl’s real predicament. This whole time, she’s been tied up and forced to whip herself while her mother recites Aramaic poetry. But Sam clearly sees she’s not the devil. And then, after seven seasons, Sam Winchester admits to the world that he too has abilities.

It’s been so long that even he isn’t sure if they’re still there. They have to be there, though. If he drank that demon blood as a baby, and exhibited powers decades later, then they must simply be dormant.

Unfortunately for the young lady, after the Winchesters helped lead her to freedom — and her mother to prison — she was tracked down by the mysterious Mr. Ketch. It seems our British Men of Letters problem hasn’t gone away. If they find out about Sam’s abilities — please bring back his powers, guys! — things are about to get a lot more complicated.

“Supernatural” Season 12 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the CW.
