‘Switched at Birth’: Vanessa Marano previews Bay’s Season 5 romantic woes

After an epically long hiatus, “Switched at Birth” is finally returning for its final season, and we’re eager to figure out what in the world is going on with Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) after Season 4’s time jump and mysterious ending.

“Bay’s in China when we open up with Season 5, and then she returns for an unbeknownst reason to the audience,” Marano explains. “The girls do end up back in Kansas City this season, and they’re trying to start their lives as adults. They are adults — I think they’re 20 years old when we come back. It’s kind of pushing yourself into that world, and creating a life for yourself that is different from the life you were leading as a kid. That’s where Bay’s at.”

The mysterious contents of this dire call will be revealed in the season premiere, but needless to say, it’s pretty life or death.

In the meantime, at least Bay has done some traveling and learned a few new life skills during her missing time. “Apparently she speaks Chinese,” Marano jokes. “I have spoken more languages on ‘Switched at Birth’ than I have in my entire life.”

When Bay returns, we’ll also finally get an answer about her love life — and whether or not she’ll be able to patch things up with Emmett (Sean Berdy) or decide to move on with Travis (Ryan Lane).

“Obviously, Travis professed his love for her, and this season is basically about if she loves him back or not,” Marano says.”Last season was about mourning Emmett and getting over that, and this season is about whether she’s ready to jump into another relationship or not. To jump or not to jump.”

“Switched at Birth” premieres Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform.
