The Last Horror Blog: ‘Crimson Peak’ and ‘The Mind’s Eye’ Clips, A Freddy Kreuger Tribute and More
New Crimson Peak clip debuts – We’re less than a month away from the release of Guillermo del Toro’s latest feature, the already mesmerizing Crimson Peak. Naturally, the hype machine is starting to cycle into high gear.
Earlier this week, we got a peek at a new clip from the film – which is set in a gothic mansion and features performances from Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Mia Wasikowska.
Nothing overtly terrifying happens here, but we do get a glimpse of the period design in the film, as well as a menacing undercurrent to the conversation about keys…
Crimson Peak opens on October 16.
Explore Freddy’s origins in short film The Confession of Fred Krueger – We’re all still mourning the passing of Wes Craven, but maybe this will cheer you up a bit.
Horror artist Nathan Thomas Milliner has crafted this 30-minute short film that honors Craven by exploring the origin of one of his most enduring creations: Freddy Krueger. The Confession of Fred Krueger takes fans back to the events before the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, including his capture and (obviously…) his confession.
For a fan film, this is quite intriguing – but don’t just take my word for it, check it out for yourself below.
Play ‘spot the homage’ in this new clip for The Mind’s Eye – Almost Human director Joe Begos is back with his latest feature, an ode to classic ‘80s cinema entitled The Mind’s Eye. The latest clip shows two men squaring off in a shootout, but the real fun is spotting all the influences in the two minute sequence. There’s a synth-heavy John Carpenter score, lighting cues reminiscent of Argento, telekinesis straight out of Scanners, and even a little nod to The Empire Strikes Back. Here’s the official plot breakdown:
“Following years remaining off the grid, Zack (Graham Skipper) captures the attention of the mysterious Dr. Slovak (John Speredakos), a telekinesis expert with ambiguous intentions. After uncovering Slovak’s nefarious plot to empower himself using a telekinesis-enabling serum harvested from the blood of his “patients”, Zack must stop Slovak and rescue his fellow telekinetic Rachel (Lauren Ashley Carter) before it’s too late.”
Creepy trailer for short film Madre de Dios hits the Internet – Mexican-Canadian filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero may not be a household name (yet), but her short films have garnered a lot of attention from gore geeks around the globe. She looks to continue that trend with this new trailer for her latest disturbing effort, Madre de Dios.
The new short features American Mary’s Tristan Risk “bound to an altar, helpless as she is transformed into a flesh and blood statue of Santa Muerte by two elderly Brujos whose sole purpose is to conjure the anti-Christ into our plane of existence.”
The short teaser trailer doesn’t divulge much, but if you loved El Gigante and Dia de los Muertos, I suspect you’ll be pleased with what you find here.
Sex equals death in Night of Something Strange trailer – Looking for a low-budget zombie film with a twist? Then this trailer for Jonathan Straiton’s Night of Something Strange is just what the doctor ordered.
We’ve got your usual zombie holocaust scenario happening in this clip, but what sets Straiton’s (who writes and directs this feature) title apart is the cause of all the morti viventi mayhem. Here’s the plot breakdown to bring that all into focus:
“Teenage friends out for Spring Break get unexpectedly detoured to a creepy motel where a deadly STD virus now runs rampant, turning those infected into the living dead.”
See kids? Sex is bad.
Horror on the Horizon
As October rapidly approaches….there are not a lot of horror movies in the local theater.
September 18 is a barren wasteland of genre offerings, unless you count animated kids’ feature Hotel Transylvania 2.
Things get a little better on September 25, when we finally get a chance to see Eli Roth’s ode to the classic Italian cannibal films with the limited release of The Green Inferno.
Fortunately, things are looking brighter on Blu-ray.
September 22 sees the arrival of the Michael Winner’s criminally underrated The Sentinel, as well as a two-pack featuring The Ford Brothers’ zombie epics The Dead and The Dead 2.
The Poltergeist remake debuts on September 29, where it’s joined by low-budget cult classic (okay, cult classic is probably stretching it…but I love it) Shock ‘Em Dead featuring Traci Lords in one of her early non-porn roles. Minor gore classic The Mutilator hits shelves that day as well, and is joined by a new Blu of John Carpenter’s Stephen King adaptation Christine, and the first season of iZombie.
