The most incredible Jim/Dwight prank from ‘The Office’ never actually aired
Do you consider yourself a big fan of “The Office”? You know all of Michael’s (Steve Carrell) bad jokes, followed the love story of Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) closely and perhaps even adopted Yankee Swap into your holiday party tradition.
That doesn’t necessarily mean you know everything there is to know about the series, though. For instance, while you may have a strong memory of the pranks Jim pulled on Dwight (Rainn Wilson), chances are you’re still missing one of them — and perhaps the greatest one he ever pulled.
How could you miss that particular prank? Because it never actually aired. In the original version of “The Office’s” series finale, the cold open was going to feature the prank to end all pranks: Jim was going to convince Dwight they were living in the Matrix.
Yes, you read that right.
Unfortunately, for one reason or another, the prank didn’t make it into the final episode. Luckily for fans though, it was been immortalized online thanks to the table read. When the cast gathered to read the show’s final script, the master prank was revealed in the cold open.
It includes training black cats to walk by Dwight’s door twice — which Pam admits isn’t fun — convincing security guard Hank (Hugh Dane) to pretend he’s Morpheus’ brother, Dorpheus, and a cast of 30 people to help convince Dwight his reality is computer generated. Still, sadly, the prank doesn’t work quite as Jim had hoped.
After all, he was manager of the Scranton branch and days away from marrying Angela (Angela Kinsey). What more could he want in a dream life? So Dwight opts to swallow the blue pill and keep living in ignorant bliss rather than escaping the Matrix and waging a war on the machines.
While this sadly never made it into the episode, at the very least, fans can watch the cast read it in a video of the full table read.
