Watch your back, Posh! Former Spice Girl-turned-style maven Victoria Beckham has angered the animal rights zealots at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals with her new collection of crocodile, lizard, and calf leather skin handbags — and the outspoken group are reportedly planning a high-profile stunt as payback when the fashionista makes a promotional visit to her UK homeland next month.
Team Beckham has bolstered security ahead of the designer’s handbag launch in London this November amid whispers that PETA is plotting to pull their most controversial stunt ever — by dousing her in lizard blood. Furious that Victoria’s bags are being billed as one of the ultimate accessories of the season, the animal rights’ activists are planning a spectacular coup d’etat to cut the ex-crooner down to size.
“PETA have been on Victoria’s back for weeks sending email after email. But it’s not as if Victoria is going to the Everglades and strangling the crocs with her bare hands,” an informant-in-the-know has revealed to The Daily Mirror. “One of the ideas being mooted is that Victoria gets covered in a bucket of animal blood – cow or lizard – at her next UK public appearance,” the insider continues. “Another rather sick suggestion was to pelt crocodile feet at her when she goes to an editor’s lunch in London next month. Victoria tries not to surround herself with bodyguards but her security has had to be increased.”
Victoria is just the latest celebrated targeted by PETA’s forces. The animal rights group has famously feuded with The Olsen Twins, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez, and even Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.
“PETA know she is high profile and that whatever stunt they pull will garner mass publicity. The fact her bags were so well received at her recent showcase in New York has simply given them more incentive.”
Victoria, on the other hand, denies that her bags subject animals to unspeakable cruelty, arguing that she has worked to ensure that all regulations were adhered to during construction of her designs.
“Everyone is entitled to personal opinion and choice, but as with all Victoria Beckham products, the handbags are made to the highest quality and design. These skins sit strictly within the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) regulations, and are monitored at every step of production. The skins are farmed in America under very tight guidelines.”
