Kong: Skull Island
[embedded content]
When it comes out: March 10
Who is in it: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Toby Kebbell, Corey Hawkins
What it’s about: King Kong is back for another reboot, this time in the same universe as the recent Godzilla remake. Kong: Skull Island takes place earlier — 1971 to be exact — as an expedition of scientists and soldiers travel to an uncharted island and discover that it’s the home of an enormous gorilla and other strange beasts and monsters.
What is in the new trailer: Set perfectly to The Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” the latest full trailer shows more of the expedition to the island and what they encounter there, yet it’s not just all the same footage we’ve seen before. There’s more of Brie Larson looking badass and John C. Reilly being a clown. Also a good amount of awesome Kong vs. Skullcrawler fighting.
What people are saying about it:
“If this movie is half as bonkers as it looks in two-minute chunks, it’ll fit right in with early 2017, which has seen mainstream genre cinema taking a serious walk on the wild side.” – Jacob Hall, /Film
“Simply one of the most insane, monster-filled, action-packed trailers we’ve seen in a long time and we love it.” – Germain Lussier, io9
“This trailer also showcases the humor that Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston are bringing to the table. Early on it was assumed that John C. Reilly would set the comedic tone for the film, but as this trailer shows, Larson and Hiddleston will carry their fair share of the laughs.” – Paul Young, Screen Rant
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
[embedded content]
When it comes out: May 5
Who is in it: Chris Pratt, Kurt Russell, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Sylvester Stallone, Elizabeth Debecki, Baby Groot (Vin Diesel)
What it’s about: Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, seeks to find his true parentage in this sequel to the hugely popular Marvel movie. Also returning are all the old favorites, including Gamora, Drax, Rocket Racoon and of course Baby Groot, with the addition of former enemy Nebula and newcomer Mantis, as the Guardians go off on new adventures in the Galaxy.
What is in the new teaser: Around a campfire, Drax slurps some kind of noisy food as the rest of the Guardians look at him in disgust.
What people are saying about it:
“It’s nice that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has enough self-awareness to recognize how ridiculous it is to pretend that every single moment of this movie is an epic, end-of-the-universe adventure. Sometimes, Drax just needs to eat.” – Katherine Trendacosta, io9
“Though quite brief, the quick teaser does what the Guardians franchise has always done best: not take itself too seriously…the chance to just sit around with the Guardians while they get disgusted by Drax’s eating habits is something we’d love to see more of in the movie.” – Mathtew Erao, Screen Rant
“Can we discern anything from this clip? The only thing that stands out to me is that, as James Gunn is cycling through the reaction shots of the group — who are all disgusted by Drax’s loud eating — Nebula (Karen Gillan) is part of the ensemble.” – Sean O’Connell, Cinema Blend
Cars 3
[embedded content]
When it comes out: June 16
Whose voices are in it: Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Armie Hammer, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, Katherine Helmond
What it’s about: It’s been more than 10 years since we first met Lightning McQueen, and like the rest of us he’s getting old. For him it means the racing world is dominated by younger, faster cars and he’s fading as a star. For us it means we can appreciate what looks like a more mature Cars movie than we’re used to.
What is in the new trailer: A lot of racing and Lightning McQueen crashing, as we’ve seen before, but there’s a little more context with mention of the innovative new cars on the track plus a glimpse of Lightning going back to Radiator Springs.
What people are saying about it:
“I’m not impressed. Sure, it might be that they are trying to sell this as a Nascar film to the Nascar audience, but I’m really not interested in a movie that will spend a lot of time on the Nascar race track.” – Peter Sciretta, /Film
“[Cars 3] is actually looking better than expected. This trailer focuses on the ‘new generation’ of high-tech racers that take out Lightning, though as learned previously, he makes a comeback…a good setup.” – Alex Billington, FirstShowing.net
“With dirt tracks, fire traps, and a constant reassurance that while he can’t ‘turn the clock back’ he can certainly ‘wind it up again,’ Cars 3 looks like it’s eschewing the Mater heavy shenanigans from Cars 2 and heading back to what’s basically the true story of the Cars franchise: Lightning McQueen’s journey from set-back to superstar.” – Mike Reyes, Cinema Blend
