We Have a Real-Life 'Avengers' Team In Case the Aliens from 'Arrival' Actua…
When Arrival hits theaters this weekend, audiences will finally be able to watch one of the best movies of the year — a unique and brainy sci-fi movie that’s very different from your typical aliens-arrive-on-earth story. The film has already received rave reviews (including one from yours truly), and Amy Adams’ terrific performance as a linguist tasked with communicating with an alien race is already garnering Oscar buzz.
But what if aliens really did arrive on our planet — would we really send in a linguist to help save the day? Chances are, yes.
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer revealed that he actually spoke with two of the people who are on a top secret team designed to respond should we come in contact with an alien race. Yes, there’s a team… and yes, they’re kinda like the nerd Avengers, according to Heisserer.
“We had many interviews with some scientific personal, who I can’t name for confidentiality reasons, who are actually on a team,” he said. “There is a binder for first contact scenarios, that a protocol gets activated, and a handful of people get called. … In real life, that exists. It’s in the pentagon somewhere, they bring that binder out and they start by calling everybody together. So the nerd version of Avengers assemble in this situation, and there’s a good contingent of scientists, and we got to talk to two of them. And [we] got a sense of the amount of steps [that occur] between getting a crew together and making that first contact.”
So not only is Arrival an incredibly compelling fictional story, but it’s also a pretty accurate portrayal of what would happen in the event aliens really did arrive here on earth. That we actually do have a team of real-life Avengers, except their super power is that they’re crazy smart.
And that’s not a bad super power to have.
