What would a ‘Downton Abbey’ movie look like?

Downton Abbey hasn’t even been dead for a year, and already there’s buzz about a potential movie to continue the series.

After six seasons, Mary (Michelle Dockery), Edith (Laura Carmichael) and the rest of the Downton Abbey inhabitants settled into their respective happily-ever-afters with a final Christmas special. Babies were born, weddings were had and cameos were made before the curtain finally closed on the captivating little series about the British elite and their live-in servants.

Now, Michelle Dockery is hinting that we might get a continuation of the story in movie format.

“I think there is potential for a film,” Dockery tells The Telegraph. “That is something I would wholeheartedly consider, so we will see. It may not be over yet.”

While this is probably just the hypothetical musings of one actress, we can’t help but wonder where a “Downton Abbey” revival movie would take the story.

Would we pick up right where we left off, with Edith adjusting to married life while Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Bates (Brendan Coyle) raise their newborn?

While that would certainly be most fans’ preference — easier to pretend the show never went away if it begins again without taking a breath — we’d argue there are better places to begin.

A short time jump would do just fine, with only a few years passing between the finale and this potential new film. As sad as it would be to see him go, Robert’s (Hugh Bonneville) eventual death seemed to be looming over the final season like a guillotine’s blade. So, picking up the story again with the aftermath of his passing would be a nice place to start.

Mary’s son George (Oliver Zac Barker), inheriting the manor as a child would make his mother the de facto heiress, which would no doubt complicate matters. On top of that, we’d have Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) adjusting to being the new Dowager — something we’re sure Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) would be all too eager to assist with.

As far as the downstairs contingent goes … you know you want to see Bates and Anna struggling with a rowdy toddler, while Barrow (Rob James-Collier) attempts to maintain his nice streak, even though he’s officially their boss.

It might be years before fans see this eventual “Downton Abbey” revival film, but we’re still excited to theorize over the possibilities.
