Which ‘TVD’ characters could, should and won’t move to ‘The Originals’ after Season …

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

On top of the devastating news that “The Vampire Diaries” is entering its final season, The CW announced at the TCA Press Tour that Season 8 has been given a shorter order of 16 episodes.

While most of you probably went into panic mode that we’d be getting even fewer episodes than normal, Zap2it started speculating about what this shortened order could mean for a possible bridge between “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” and which characters could be moving over to the spinoff.

Julie Plec commented at San Diego Comic-Con that her ideal outcome for “The Originals” would be to have it go on for many more seasons, with “The Vampire Diaries” characters dropping in here and there, and CW President Mark Pedowitz agrees that the spinoff might have a long future ahead of it.

“It could live very well on its own,” Pedowitz said at the TCA Press Tour. “Hopefully it will see a fifth year.”

If that does turn out to be the case, we won’t have to say goodbye to our favorite vampires, witches and werewolves for too long.

However, moving characters from “The Vampire Diaries” to “The Originals” — permanently or temporarily — is a tricky business. There are a few characters who could and should make the move, while others are probably out of the question.

Damon Salvatore

Considering Ian Somerhalder announced his exit from the series long before “The Vampire Diaries” announced its final season, we’re willing to bet that he’s not about to sign on for another few years as Damon over in New Orleans.

Stefan Salvatore

We’re going to slate Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) as a definite maybe. Stefan has already crossed over once, which would make it easy for him to slide right into the show after “The Vampire Diaries” ends, but we’ve got a feeling this decision will have more to do with Wesley’s next career move than anything else.

Bonnie Bennett

Like Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham decided to leave “The Vampire Diaries” before she knew Season 8 would be the last, so even though we’d pay good money to see Bonnie take New Orleans by storm, we don’t think it’s on the agenda.

Caroline Forbes

Klaroline fans would probably go absolutely nuts if Caroline (Candice King) moved over to the spinoff after “The Vampire Diaries” ends. But, while this character is definitely one that should make the move, we’re also pretty sure she’s one that won’t. “I don’t know if Caroline has any reason to go visit New Orleans,” King told Zap2it at Comic-Con.

Alaric Saltzman

New Orleans might not be the safest of homes, but it does have a rich history of witchcraft, which could be just what the doctor ordered for Alaric’s (Matt Davis) twin witch babies. “The Originals” cast even told TV Line that Alaric is their favorite pick to make the jump after “The Vampire Diaries” ends.

Enzo St. John

We’re 100% in favor of Enzo (Michael Malarkey) packing his bags and heading to New Orleans after his time on “The Vampire Diaries” ends. He’s already got the accent, the penchant for murder and the wicked sense of sarcasm needed to fit right in with “The Originals.”

Matt Donovan

Matt (Zach Roerig) has also briefly crossed over to “The Originals,” but we’re not sure he’s destined to make the move permanent. Matt left everything behind in the Season 7 finale to avoid a supernatural lifestyle, so unless he makes some big changes in Season 8, we don’t think New Orleans would be a great spot for him.

Tyler Lockwood

We’re going to go ahead and say that Tyler (Michael Trevino) can and should make the jump to “The Originals” even though he left “The Vampire Diaries” behind after Season 6. Tyler had a great dynamic with both Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and he’d add some nice nostalgia to the mix.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
