‘You’re the Worst’: Gretchen is ‘looking for a quick fix’ in therapy
The Season 3 trailer for “You’re the Worst” is finally here, and it’s a hilarious montage of Gretchen (Aya Cash) getting used to seeing a therapist for “the talky-talky.”
“You’re the Worst” depicted Gretchen’s depression in Season 2 in a revolutionary way for television, digging into the frightening and sometimes confusing way mental illness affects people in an utterly realistic way.
After years of struggling with her depression, Gretchen will now be seeking therapy and possibly prescription medication to help her deal with her illness, which will obviously be a big and challenging step for her.

Zap2it talked to Cash and showrunner Steven Falk about Gretchen’s journey with therapy in Season 3, and they both agree that it’s going to be a bit of a bumpy ride.
“We can all imagine that it’s not going to go smoothly,” Cash says. “I don’t think Gretchen understands what therapy really is. She’s kind of looking for a quick fix, like she’s always tried to. Most of her fixes are immediate and superficial — drugs, alcohol, whatever she can get her hands on to make herself feel better in the moment — but the long game of therapy is not what she’s interested in. She’s still trying to figure out what it is, why it is and how it can help her.”
As far as the possibility of antidepressants go, Falk is excited to explore what — if any — changes those “happy pills” could bring out in Gretchen.

“We’ll see her start to investigate [depression] from both a pharmacological standpoint and a therapy standpoint … what I think is fun is to explore is what part of our personalities could be attributed to brain chemistry and what part is just who we are,” Falk says. “If you’re a dirtbag, and then you take away your mental illness, does that explain away all your dirtbaggery?”
If we had to guess, we’d bet Gretchen is going to face some hard truths about which parts of her “edge” are due to depression and which parts are 100 percent Gretchen in the new season.
“You’re the Worst” premieres Aug. 31st at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FXX.
