Downsizing is only one reason ailing actress Zsa Zsa Gabor and Husband No. 9 Prince Frederic von Anhalt have put their Bel Air mansion up for sale. Von Anhalt says they elderly pair can no longer afford the mortgage on the 28-room, 12,000 square-foot mansion due to Zsa Zsa’ mounting medical bills.

The couple decided to sell the property Zsa Zsa purchased more than 30 years ago after the flamboyant actress, 93, had most of her right leg amputated earlier this month after a stubborn blood clot led to the onset of gangrene. Gabor has been in and out of the hospital since breaking her hip in a fall at the home last July. The Moulin Rouge actress is now under the care of nurses and the costs of her medical care top $21,000 a month. The mortgage and upkeep on the house drains the couple of another $35,000. It’s all become too much for Von Anhalt, who claims he and Zsa Zsa lost a great deal of dough after investing with monstrous master swindler Bernie Madoff several years ago.

“I am sick and tired of hiding behind those three words, ‘rich and famous,’” Frederic revealed this week. “Maybe we are famous, but we are not rich. We are talking about $56,000 I have to raise every month. This is why I have to sell the house. It is a must.”

The house, which once belonged to Elvis Presley, is on the market with an asking price of $28 million. There’s only one condition for all potential buyers, says Frederic: The aging pair must be allowed to remain in the house.

“The new owner has to pay for everything. Everybody is filthy rich around us, and so somebody is going to (want) the house.”
