Glam Flags are flying half-staff all over the world this holiday week after legendary screen dame Zsa Zsa Gabor lost most of her right leg to amputation this week, despite doctors’ feverish efforts to save the limb.
In July, Gabor broke her hip and had replacement surgery, causing the star to be admitted to the hospital several times in the months since for swelling in her legs and blood clots throughout her body. The Moulin Rouge actress, 93, had an infection in her leg for several months due to one of those clots. Doctors tried using antibiotics to save the leg. She was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 2 and put on a regime of strong antibiotics as an alternative to severing the limb, but the medicine was ineffective, leaving physicians with no other choice but to amputate Gabor’s leg in a surgery at UCLA/Ronald Reagan Medical Center on Friday.
Gabor had about three-fourths of her leg amputated after her ninth husband Prince Frederic von Anhalt gave the go-ahead for the life-saving operation.
Oh dear…
There is one bit of good news: Zsa Zsa — who only had a 50/50 chance of survival during yesterday’s surgery — is expected to recover just fine and heal without any further complications.
We’re rooting for you, Zsa Zsa!
