The King of Rock is no match for the cast of Glee across the pond. The all-singing, all-dancing TV show, about an unlikely group of high school misfits who form a choir, has smashed Elvis Presley’s UK pop chart record after becoming the fastest act to notch 20 Top 40 hits.
Glee’s Britney Spears Tribute Episode debuted to a record-breaking audience on US TV last year, but only aired in the UK last week. The cast’s rendition of Spears’ “Toxic” entered the charts on Sunday, giving the show’s stars their 20th hit in just 57 weeks – 31 weeks ahead of Elvis’ record.
Fans of the popular FOX comedy, affectionately-dubbed Gleeks, have flocked to purchase songs performed on the series since its debut in 2009.
“The success emphasises how digital downloading has transformed the consumer’s engagement with music. The Glee cast are superstars of the digital music age,” says Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the UK’s Official Charts Company.
