James Gammon, known for playing the proverbial “good ol’ boy” role in numerous movies including 1989’s Major League and Cold Mountain, died at his daughter’s home in Costa Mesa, California on Friday. He was 70.

Gammon succumbed after a lengthy battle against cancer of the adrenal glands and the liver, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Beginning in the 1970s’, Gammon appeared in a host of films, including The Milagro Beanfield War, Leaving Normal, Urban Cowboy, Ironweed, Silverado, and Cold Mountain. On television he played the patriarch on Nash Bridges” from 1996 to 2001, enjoyed a recurring role on The Waltons, and made guest appearances on shows like Gunsmoke and Grey’s Anatomy.

However, Gammon is perhaps best remembered as Cleveland Indians manager Lou Brown in the box office hit Major League, which co-starred Wesley Snipes and Charlie Sheen.
