“Star Wars” 3D Re-Release

May the force be 3D….On Wednesday, lensman George Lucas announced plans to convert all six Star Wars films to 3D.

Lucas Films will be re-releasing each installment of the Star Wars series in 3D, beginning with the 1999 prequel Star Wars: Episode One, The Phantom Menace, in 2012. After the first re-release, one film in the series will be remastered and reissued each year until the collection is complete.

“The live-action Star Wars saga will be converted to 3D. There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the Star Wars Saga has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive. The cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level,” read a statement from Lucasfilm uploaded to the Star Wars website this week.

Lucas himself will be overlooking the conversion. The famed director has been an outspoken opponent of 3D technology, but has decided to give it a try following the advances made with big-screen hits like Avatar and Alice In Wonderland.

“I haven’t been a big fan of 3-D, … the technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this (new technology) will be a new impetus to make that happen.”
