Word out of China is that Tang Wei is the current top choice to play the second Bond girl in the upcoming 23rd James Bond movie, to be directed by Sam Mendes. Wei, who starred in films like Lust, Caution and Wu Xia, heads up a list that also includes actresses like Fan Bingbing, Li Bingbing, Shu Qi and Josie Ho. French actress Berenice Marlohe will be playing the other Bond girl in a story that will find the super-spy traveling to places like South Africa (for an elaborate train sequence) and, now, possibly China, considering the fact that producers have been searching high and low for an Asian Bond girl, interviewing over 100 actresses.
One of the reasons why this role is so highly sought-after (aside from the chance to be in a big Hollywood production) is because the franchise’s previous Asian Bond girl, Michelle Yeoh, became a huge star following her part in Tomorrow Never Dies, proving that the role of “Bond Girl” can turn an international star into a Hollywood star. Twitch likes Wei’s chances not just because of her English skills, but also because her management company is a major investor in the new Bond film.
