A New ‘My Little Pony’ Movie Is Coming to Theaters
Children of the ’80s and bronies alike, rejoice! A “My Little Pony” feature film is headed our way this June.
In “My Little Pony Equestria Girls,” some jerk steals Twilight Sparkle’s crown. In her hunt for her missing headgear, Twilight Sparkle ends up in another world where she’s just a human girl in high school. Boo! (In case you didn’t know, Twilight Sparkle is an awesome unicorn pony and the lead in the animated series “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.” She turned into a princess in the third season finale. Twilight Sparkle is a very busy Little Pony.)
This other world of Equestria is an extension of the Hasbro brand, described by the New York Times as “a parallel world in which the My Little Pony characters were reconceived as teenage girls in high school.” It seems that this movie is an introduction to a world of My Little Ponies that are targeted towards an audience that’s slightly older — or, you know, the guys who think Twilight Sparkle and her crew are hot tamales.
In a neat twist, Hasbro is actually making a movie to introduce its new products instead of making a movie with the potential for lots of tie-ins.
“My Little Pony Equestria Girls” will have its sparkly pink premiere this June at the Los Angeles Film Festival’s “Family Day.” It will open in theaters the next day, and head to DVD and Blu-ray later this summer.
