Five episodes into “Timeless” and we’re sure more than ever that Garcia Flynn (Goran Visnjic) is not the real bad guy. Sure, he’s no-nonsense, doesn’t have the kindest demeanor and doesn’t hesitate getting the job done — no matter how extreme it seems — but even he seems to have his limits.
In Monday’s (Oct. 31) episode, aptly titled “The Alamo,” Lucy (Abigail Spencer), Wyatt (Matt Lanter) and Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) headed back in time to… well, the Alamo. It was here that they did their best to thwart the attack on the compound, thusly doing their part to make sure Texas became a state.

Sure, watching our heroes fight alongside some great American legends — Davy Crockett (Jeff Kober) and James Bowie (Chris Browning), to name a couple — was pretty great, but what really stood out to us was how Flynn interacted with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (Alex Fernandez). While he may have ventured into the heart of the Mexican forces’ stronghold, and suggested improvements to their plan of attack, it was his concern for the safety of the women and children in the Alamo that sparked our interest.
Maybe it’s too hopeful to view a villain in such a light — that he would have sympathy for those innocents located in the area he’s set to attack. But, we can’t help but think of this as a small behavioral trait that points to a bigger twist yet to unfold. We previously posed the notion that Flynn isn’t the bad guy everyone is being led to believe. This just further pushes our theory forward.

After all, it was just a couple episodes ago that Flynn mentioned to Anthony (Matt Frewer) that he’d be open to killing Rufus to get rid of Rittenhouse. What exactly does that mean? We know Rufus has been spying on Lucy and Wyatt for Connor Mason (Paterson Joseph) — and after the run-in Rufus had with the mysterious man from Rittenhouse last week, we’re beginning to think that they’re the real big bad in this equation. The who, what, why and how of this whole mess, however, are still a bit of a mystery.
“Timeless” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
