'Alien: Covenant,' 'Justice League' and More 2017 Heavyweights Offer Up New…

Every summer sees Hollywood unleashing its biggest franchises. There’s something unique about 2017’s crop of movies, though: the biggest are all either remakes or sequels.

USA Today put out their preview piece today, which gives us new images from the fifth Transformers movie, the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean, the sixth Alien (not counting the AvP movies), the third Zack Snyder DCEU movie, and the latest live-action remake of a classic animated movie. And while it may be easy to gripe that none of these are original films, it’s hard not to be excited about certain things in each of them. So let’s take a look.

Alien: Covenant
In theaters: May 19, 2017

The first Alien is through and through a horror movie. Sure, it’s steeped in sci-fi elements, but strip those away and you’ve got a movie that is terrifying to its core. So we’re more than a little excited that the sequel to Prometheus, which is still a prequel to the first Alien, is said to be going back to the original’s scary roots. And while we’re totally game for that, we also wouldn’t mind a dash of James Cameron’s Aliens action in the mix, either. And as the above still image shows, we may just be getting it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
In theaters: May 26, 2017

A movie is only as good as its villain. And say what you will about the Pirates franchise, but they do villains better than most. At this stage we know exactly what we’re going to get from Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. We are much, much more curious to see Javier Bardem’s Captain Salazar, a dead pirate whose constantly underwater look may just be one of the most captivating special effects of the year.

Justice League
In theaters: November 17, 2017

It’s starting to feel like Justice League may be the deciding factor for Zack Snyder’s entire DC Comics legacy. There hasn’t really been a consensus around either Man of Steel or Batman v Superman, and now Snyder is uniting the largest number of DC’s heroes we have ever seen on the big screen before. We don’t know what’s going on in this picture (are they all getting off of some kind of Batplane?), but it’s still cool to see Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman all together in the same movie.

Transformers: The Last Knight
In theaters: June 23, 2017

Michael Bay has hit a level of career success where it seems like he can basically just do whatever he wants and get a green light. That’s why The Last Knight looks like it may just be the weirdest Transformers movie yet. Optimus Prime is a bad guy! Anthony Hopkins is in it! At least part of the movie is a period piece! And there’s this image, which looks like it takes place inside an ancient robot tomb or something. 

Beauty and the Beast
In theaters: March 17, 2017

Disney has been straight crushing it with their live-action remakes of classic animated movies. We have absolutely no reason to think that also won’t be the case with Beauty and the Beast— especially when we’ve got such lovely images like the one above.
