'Aquaman' Villain Identified, While Star Jason Momoa Circles 'The Crow' Reb…

The king of Atlantis will face off against a familiar foe in Aquaman, to be directed by James Wan. After making an extremely brief appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jason Momoa will portray Aquaman in next year’s Justice League before swimming to a lead role in his own spin-off adventure.

It’s not official yet, but The Wrap reports that Black Manta (below) will be the villain in Aquaman. The character first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 and has battled Aquaman ever since, becoming his archenemy. At least two different origin stories have been published, explaining his motivation and strong antipathy toward Aquaman. In any event, the character has always been noted for his extremely violent disposition.

Will Beall is finalizing the screenplay, based on a detailed treatment by Geoff Johns and director James Wan. Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe will also star in the movie. Aquaman is scheduled for release on July 27, 2018.

Will a remake of The Crow ever lift off? If it does, the filmmakers might have to give special thanks to Aquaman. That’s because Jason Momoa is circling the titular role, according to Mashable.

The current remake has been in development since 2008, with a variety of stars — including Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans and Jack Huston — rumored or attached at different times. Last year, production was put on hold due to the bankruptcy of studio Relativity Media. but then we heard that filming would begin in March 2016 under the direction of Corin Hardy.

That didn’t happen, obviously, but once again Relativity wants to move forward and so Momoa is in talks to star. Momoa broke out in 2011 with a magnetic performance in Game of Thrones, followed by the starring role in Conan the Barbarian (above). The remake did not perform up to expectations, though, and the actor’s subsequent movies failed to generate much fire.

Thus, his casting as Aquaman reminded audiences of his lurking talent and dominating physical presence. Those qualities could lend themselves well to playing the brooding, doomed title role in The Crow, though we’ll have to wait to see if this long-touted production finally gets off the ground. In the meantime, the actor posted a photo of himsef with director Hardy a few days ago (above). The caption sounds quite optimistic and should give hope to those who want to see the character fly again on the big screen.
