Brand New Trailer for ’21 Jump Street’ is … Kinda Funny!

I’m a survivor of the 1980s. I was there. I had the clothes and the cassettes and the terrible taste in television — and so I do remember the goofy-ass “cops in high school” program known as 21 Jump Street. An early success for the Fox network, the show featured Johnny Depp, Richard Grieco, and several other actors I don’t remember at all, and yes, it was about baby-faced cops who battled crime undercover in a high school. I do not remember the show being funny in any way, shape, or form.

The late-arriving movie version, however, is most definitely a farce. (An intentional one.) The upcoming 21 Jump Street stars an enjoyably obtuse-looking Channing Tatum and a newly-svelte Jonah Hill — and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that this seems like a pretty funny pairing. The directors are Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who brought a lot of unexpected wit to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs a few years ago, so there’s certainly some hope that this big-screen remake has something going for it. (For a little bit more on this oddball project, check out Todd Gilchrist’s set visit from a few months ago.)
Decide for yourself: here’s the brand-new, red-band (R-rated) trailer, and thanks to JoBlo for the tip.
