Cars 2 Races Into First Place
Despite receiving the worst reviews for a Pixar movie yet, Cars 2 earned an estimated $ 68 million in first place domestically at the weekend box office. The sequel opened in 4,115 theaters and averaged $ 16,525 per location. The original Cars debuted to $ 60.1 million in 2006. Internationally, Cars 2 collected $ 42.9 million in 18 markets to have a worldwide total of $ 110.9 million so far.
Columbia Pictures’ Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake, opened in second place with a strong $ 31 million in 3,049 North American theaters, averaging $ 10,167 per site. The R-rated comedy also made $ 12.9 million overseas in 10 countries.
Last week’s champ, Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern suffered a 65.5% drop in ticket sales and was bumped to third with $ 18.4 million. The comic book adaptation, budgeted at $ 200 million and starring Ryan Reynolds, has earned $ 89.3 million after two weeks.
Paramount Pictures’ Super 8 added $ 12.1 million its third weekend in fourth place to push its total to $ 95.2 million domestically. The J.J. Abrams film cost about $ 50 million to make.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins rounded out the top five with $ 10.3 million. The Jim Carrey family comedy, released by Fox, has earned $ 39.4 million and was budgeted at $ 55 million.
Fox’s X-Men: First Class took sixth with $ 6.6 million and has earned $ 132.8 million domestically after four weeks. The comic book adaptation cost $ 160 million to produce.
In seventh place, The Hangover Part II added $ 5.9 million for a total of $ 243.9 million after five weeks, while Bridesmaids received another $ 5.4 million to take its seven-week total to $ 147 million. In the ninth spot, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides brought in $ 4.7 million and has earned $ 229.1 million after six weeks.
Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris was in tenth place with $ 4.5 million from 951 theaters. The romantic comedy is up to $ 28.6 million after six weeks in theaters.
