Dennis Hopper Dies — Hopper Succumbs To Prostate Cancer

Oh My Damn! Is the Summer of 2010 set to bring another round of high-profile deaths to Tinseltown?

Just one day after Hollywood said farewell to troubled child star Gary Coleman, Easy Rider legend Dennis Hopper died at his Venice, California home early Saturday.

He was 74.

The actor, director, and artist succumbed to prostate cancer in the presence of his children, according to his estranged wife Victoria. The star had quietly battled the disease for over nine years, although his condition took a turn for the worst in recent months.

In March, a very frail-look Dennis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where he was introduced by Viggo Mortensen and honored by his pal, fellow Hollywood icon Jack Nicholson. At the time of his death, the actor was still engaged in a bitter divorce battle with Victoria, after filing for divorce in January. According to court papers released earlier this year, Dennis was too ill to undergo questioning in the legal proceedings.

Hopper’s death comes right on the heels of one of his biggest accomplishments as an artist. On July 11, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles will open the first comprehensive survey of Hopper’s artistic career to be mounted by a North American museum with an exhibit called “Dennis Hopper Double Standard” (named after his iconic 1961 photograph).

Hopper had a long and tumultuous career that included such films as Easy Rider, Hoosiers, Blue Velvet, and Speed. In recent years, he appeared in a starring role on the Starz original series, Crash.
