But even among the dozens of moments and thousands of tweets, five stood out as the most tweeted-about moments. Let the countdown begin …
5. Sarah Paulson wins her first Emmy
Paulson has been nominated six times and she finally won, earning the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series Emmy for her portrayal of Marcia Clark in “People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” Paulson actually brought Clark as her plus-1 and apologized to Clark in her speech for judging her all those years ago when she prosecuted O.J. Simpson for murder. Twitter was thrilled for her — fellow nominee Kerry Washington sums it up nicely.
4. ‘Veep’ is re-elected
For the second consecutive year, HBO’s political satire “Veep” won Outstanding Comedy Series. This was the show’s fifth nomination — it has been nominated every year since its premiere, winning for Seasons 4 and 5.
3. ‘Game of Thrones’ is crowned again
For the second consecutive year, “Game of Thrones” took home the hardware for best drama series. It also won for best writing. All told, the 2016 Emmys made “Game of Thrones” the most honored primetime TV series of all time with 38 total wins. The previous high-watermark was set by “Frasier” with 37.
2. Rami Malek has the line of the night
When Malek won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for “Mr. Robot,” he began his acceptance speech with easily the best line of the night.
1. Tatiana Maslany wins for ‘Orphan Black’ (finally)
It sometimes takes the Emmys a few seasons to catch on to a really good show. Case in point: Tatiana Maslany didn’t get nominated for “Orphan Black” until Season 3 and she didn’t win until Season 4. The Clone Club was understandably ecstatic.
