The Social Network, a new movie about one of the web’s most popular social networking websites, Facebook, finished in the top slot at the weekend box office this weekend.

The film — directed by David Fincher and produced by Sony/Columbia Productions — took in $23 million at the domestic box office, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com. The Social Network co-stars Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook’s allegedly dubious founder Mark Zuckerberg and Justin Timberlake as Napster.com chief Sean Parker. The pic managed to stir controversy in the months and weeks prior to its release for its exploration of claims that Zuckerberg stole the concept for Facebook from two classmates. Disney’s Brenda Song, Andrew Garfield, who has been cast to play Spider-Man in the film franchise, and Rooney Mara, who will play the title role in the eagerly-anticipated film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, co-star.
