First 'Life' Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds Go to Space
Cast your mind back to 1962, when the race for space was still in its early stages. In September of that year, President John F. Kennedy gave a stirring address on the efforts by the U.S., saying: “There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind.”
Since then, we’ve witnessed many missions in space, both in real life and on the big screen. The latest, titled Life, features Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds and the stirring words of President Kennedy in the first, exciting trailer.

Gyllenhaal, Ferguson and Reynolds are three members of an International Space Station crew that begins monumental research on Mars. They are tasked with investigating the very first evidence of extraterrestrial life. As demonstrated in the trailer, their research has immediate and very painful consequences for them individually and possibly for the future of mankind.
We first heard about this project right after the successful launch of Deadpool earlier this year. By that point, Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) was already confirmed for a leading role and Ryan Reynolds was in talks to star. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who adapted Deadpool for the big screen, wrote the original screenplay. Daniel Espinosa was set to direct; he previously worked with Reynolds on the 2012 thriller Safe House.
Less than a month later, Jake Gyllenhaal (Demolition, above) came on board to star, with Reynolds stepping back to a supporting role because of a change in his schedule. Reynolds’ character has a prominent place in the trailer and he also provides a bit of comic relief, so he’s clearly still important to the story.
Undoubtedly we’ll hear more about the movie in the months to come. Life will open in theaters on Memorial Day next year, or May 26, 2017.
