Not ever ship gets a happy ending, and some ships feel like they’re going to take their sweet time getting together.
2016 might have been a great year for some couples, but others didn’t quite make it across the finish line. These ships are still platonic — or sometimes eve enemies — despite history, obvious feelings, and even declarations of love in some cases. Not all of them will make it in 2017, we know, but they’re still giving us hope for the new year.

Stiles & Lydia (‘Teen Wolf’)
Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) and Lydia (Holland Roden) are inching closer and closer to becoming a couple in “Teen Wolf’s” final season, but they’re still not quite there yet. We got a pretty epic ‘I love you’ to tide us over, and we’re about 99.9 percent sure that these two will be taking the plunge when the show returns in 2017. Until then, we’ll just wait patiently for these two idiots to realize they’re perfect for each other.
Oliver & Felicity (‘Arrow’)
After getting engaged and then breaking that engagement in Season 4, we were kind of hoping Season 5 of “Arrow” would bring Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) back together in a beautiful and natural way. That has yet to happen — Oliver actually ended up accidentally killing her new boyfriend — but we’ve got faith that this ship will set sail in the long run.
Joyce & Sheriff Hopper (‘Stranger Things’)
The adults on “Stranger Things” have been through as much turmoil as the kids have and they deserve a little love. It really seems as though after being on her own, raising two boys, Joyce (Winona Ryder) could use someone to share the load with. Sheriff Hopper (David Harbour) meanwhile has had his share of heartbreak, losing his daughter to cancer. Perhaps in Season 2 Joyce and the only person who would believe her about Mike (Finn Wolfhard) will find their into each other’s lives in a romantic way. It would certainly help both of them deal with their loneliness.
Clarke Griffin & Bellamy Blake (‘The 100’)
In the post-apocalyptic future we are nothing if we can’t love. Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor) suffered a great loss this year when her lover, Commander Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey), was killed, but Lexa was not the only person to share Clarke’s fervor for justice and loyalty to her people. Bellamy (Bob Morley) and Clarke have been both foes and comrades in the struggle for survival, but no matter what side they are on, the deep respect and love they have for one another is apparent. It’s impossible to deny their chemistry, and now that “The 100” is back for at least one more season in 2017, Clarke and Bellamy might finally get their shot.
Belle & Rumplestiltskin (‘Once Upon a Time’)
Call us crazy, but we still love the Rumbelle ship on “Once Upon a Time,” and we’ll probably never stop rooting for them. They’ve got a lot of work to do on their relationship (and their potentially villainous son) in the months to come, but if there’s one couple we’d really like to see reconcile and get back together, it’s them. It’s a tale as old as time!
Oswald Cobblepot & Edward Nygma (‘Gotham’)
The relationship between Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) has been on our minds since their brief Season 1 interaction, but it wasn’t until Season 3 of “Gotham” that the show went there: Oswald’s romantic feelings for Ed developed to a fever pitch, and Nygma’s girlfriend got caught in the crossfire. Given the future Riddler’s vendetta against his former BFF now, chances are this ship is sunk — but for a bit, we finally got to see just how deep their bond could get. A surprising and smart move by the show, as problematic as it is.
Kara & Mon-El (‘Supergirl’)
We’re waffling on whether we want Kara (Melissa Benoist) to remain single and do her own thing this year, or if we’d rather see her hook up with her new protege, the super sexy Daxamite (Chris Wood). The chemistry in finally there for Mon-El and Kara in a way it hasn’t been with any of her previous relationships, and it’s hard to imagine them not ending up together in some way. Here’s hoping they have a talk in 2017 about that delirious liplock they shared in the “Supergirl” midseason finale.
Clary & Jace (‘Shadowhunters’)
No amount of lingering looks or intimate caresses can wash away the truth that you accidentally fell in love with your sister — which leaves Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) in a bit of a pickle. We’re holding out hope this is all just a case of mistaken identity… Otherwise we’ll have to move this ship out of the hopeful category and into the “It should never happen EVER” category.
Spencer & Caleb (‘Pretty Little Liars’)
The “Pretty Little Liars” writers toyed with our emotions regarding Spaleb in Season 7a, getting this couple we’ve been shipping since Season 3 together in spectacular, sexy fashion. However, since the show is determined to get all of its original couples together — like how in the real world everyone just magically ends up with their high school sweethearts, uh huh — Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) were toast like four episodes later… And now the door is wide open for Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb to live happily ever after.Hanna deserves to be happy — but we do too!
Meredith & Riggs (‘Grey’s Anatomy’)
We never thought we’d get over Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) death on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and we certainly never imagined we’d ever want to see Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) in a relationship other than MerDer. To our genuine shock and awe, however, we’re seriously digging this flirty friendship between Meredith and Riggs (Martin Henderson). Sure, they’re no longer having illicit backseat sex, but we wouldn’t mind if they picked that back up in the new year…
