‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’: How have Lorelai & Emily not gone to therap…

Are you just as surprised as we are that Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) have never gone to family therapy before?

With the startling lack of progress they made in “Spring,” it’s probably no surprise that this mother-daughter duo didn’t make it into a therapist’s office before now, but they’re the perfect candidates. A teenage pregnancy, a runaway daughter, 16 years of estrangement and a boatload of emotional baggage? Sounds like a perfect recipe for therapy to us.

Heck, they should probably bring Rory (Alexis Bledel) on their next trip, since she’s got the whole self-destructive tendencies thing working for her.

After continuing a no-strings-attached relationship with her college ex-boyfriend (who happens to be engaged — WHAT?!), Rory threw in the towel on her first Condé Nast pitch, turned down Headmaster Charleston’s (Dakin Matthews) kind suggestion to get a masters degree and teach at Chilton and then went to a job interview for a site she didn’t want to work for without preparing at all. Not for nothing, but shouldn’t Rory be trying a little harder when making major life choices like this?

Where is Jess Mariana (Milo Ventimiglia) to knock some sense into her when you need him?

The scenes with Paris (Liza Weil) remain the funniest, most enjoyable moments of the revival so far. Besides the hilarious Tristan shoutout (why, oh why couldn’t Chad Michael Murray make an appearance?), we got to see a typical Paris meltdown, proving that even if you’re successful and your life seems totally together, you can still be incredibly unhappy and insecure. And if that point wasn’t driven home enough, Paris got kicked while she was down (and strangely lifted up again) by her old high school bully, Francie (Emily Bergl).

Meanwhile, Lorelai’s surrogacy plans seem to be well and truly dropped for now — we don’t imagine they’ll stay that way — but one can only hope she and Luke (Scott Patterson) have a more in depth conversation about the subject. The last time these two decided to sublimate their feelings on the current course of their relationship, things ended very badly. Like, sleep with Christopher, run away to Paris and marry him, bad.

In the meantime, “Parenthood” fans should go back and pay extra attention to Rory and Lorelai’s “waiting in line” montage. You’ll catch the familiar face of Mae Whitman — Graham’s other on-screen daughter — waiting in line for a cronut.

The more elusive cameos from Melissa McCarthy, Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki and Sutton Fosters are as of yet, remain unspotted.
