Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstong will make his Broadway debut as part of the cast of American Idiot, the smash rock opera inspired by the band’s 2004 album of the same name, The New York Times ArtsBeat Blog is reporting.
Billie Joe will temporarily replace actor Tony Vincent, who’s on leave from the show until Oct. 12 for a personal family matter. Armstrong will star as St. Jimmy in eight performances of the production from Sept. 28 through Oct. 3, when he leaves town to kick off hisband’s South American tour. The play follows the story of a musician named Johnny who is haunted by an apparition that helps fuel Johnny’s drug addiction.
American Idiot won two Tony Awards, Best Sets and Best Lighting for a musical, but lost the Best Musical to “Memphis.
