“Grey’s Anatomy” kept us waiting until the very last minute Thursday night (Feb. 2) to find out whether or not Karev (Alex Chambers) really took the plea deal — going to jail and losing his license — but lo and behold, right before the credits rolled and after an hour of misdirection, we discover he did not.
While Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) frantically search the intent and pound the pavement looking to find out the verdict, it’s so Karev to discover he had turned off his phone, and spent the day sleeping — in Meredith’s bed to boot! Forever a selfish and stubborn man-child, we just can’t hate him. And we’re so glad he’s not leaving Grey-Sloan… Especially since another doctor we’ve grown to love will be.

Now, we’ve said goodbye to a lot of physicians from this long-running medical drama — Lexi, George, Izzy, Callie, Mark, and most recently Derek, just to name a few of the big ones — so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when a cast member is moving on. And yet, it always somehow is. We become so easily invested in these well-crafted characters it’s impossible not feel some sort of emotional tug when actors move on to other series. So, we openly admit to being sad that Dr. Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) will no longer be a full-time cast member, come next season.
Edwards first came on the scene as an intern back in Season 9, and throughout the years has proven herself to be the most promising attending in Seattle. Shonda Rhimes will also be sad to see the 35-year-old actress go: In fact, the all-powerful showrunner tried stealing her off “Grey’s” last Spring for her own new comedy pilot, “Toast,” but it never took off. However, Hinton will be hanging up her scrubs to work another high profile producer, Alan Ball. TV Line reports she’s signed on for Ball’s new HBO show, in which Hinton will be starring alongside Holly Hunter, who’ll be playing her adoptive mother.
It’s unknown whether or not Edwards will be signing off “Grey’s” entirely, or if she’ll be able to return on a guest star basis come Season 14. So while the turmoil of who will be the Chief of Residents will remain one of the main focus moving forward, along with whether or not Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) can make it as a married couple, audiences should keep an eye on Edwards’ storyline. Fingers crossed she lives to the Season 13 finale, because when it comes to this show, you really never know what will happen … with anyone … ever.
“Grey’s Anatomy” airs on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
