Hold the cure — did ‘The Vampire Diaries’ really just kill Enzo?

Friday’s (Feb. 3) “Vampire Diaries” left us with a sound that will haunt our dreams for nights to come: The bloodcurdling, guttural scream coming from Bonnie (Kat Graham) as she held the already decaying corpse of Enzo (Michael Malarkey) was so raw, her pain and anguish could be felt in our own souls. After Ripper Stefan (Paul Wesley) compels Bonnie’s real estate agent to get access to Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) body, there’s one protective vampire in love still blocking his entrance to the house. Without hesitation, Stefan rips out Enzo’s heart.

But wait, is Enzo really dead? We’ve seen a lot of vampire hearts get ripped out in the past eight seasons, but if there’s one thing this CW series loves to do, it’s bringing people back form the dead. So, we can’t help but wonder… Is this for real?

With just 5 episodes left ever, it’s not too crazy for a lead to die, but when we asked actor Michael Malarkey if the nostalgia had started to kick in now that the final season is wrapping up, he told us, “Yes and no. I’ve got so much going on at the moment with pilot season coming up and my record that’s going to be coming out this coming year. I’m just so focused on day to day tasks. I’ve literally not even had time to think about it. I suppose when I do my last day of filming, there will be that moment, and it will probably come rushing in.”

And there you have it, ladies and gentleman. If Malarkey has yet to have his last day on set, he must be returning in some form another. Whether in Bonnie’s dreams, or magically resurrected, there are hundreds of different ways Enzo could return before “Diaries” turns its final page. We just have to wait and see how.

In a moment of fearing for her own life, and absolute rage towards Stefan for hurting Enzo, Bonnie stabs Stefan with the cure to keep him from killing Elena (and herself, presumably). This was the cure Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and crew were planning to inject in Cade (Wole Parks) in order to make the devil human, their gameplan to finally kill him. Now we have no idea how they can get rid of Cade, or if Damon (fingers crossed) has a Plan B.

But Damon always has a Plan B… Right?

“The Vampire Diaries” airs on Friday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
