James Cameron Takes Us Behind the Scenes of Disney's 'Avatar' Theme Park

We’re not exactly sure when we’ll get another Avatar movie, but we’ve been assured there will eventually be many sequels to James Cameron’s hugely successful 2009 sci-fi feature. Ahead of those, Disney has created a new theme park based on the initial Best Picture nominee called Pandora – The World of Avatar, and it’s set to open in 2017.

Disney Parks has just released a video sharing a behind the scenes look at Pandora and its attractions, which are being hyped up as equivalently innovative to the movie itself. Cameron appears in the video, along with Avatar producer Jon Landau and eclectic Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde, as they explain some of the rides and show as much as possible.

Some of it they don’t want to show, probably, because it’ll be a great surprise. “There’s something pretty amazing at the end of that river ride that you’ve never seen anything like in your life,” Cameron says about a biolumenescent water ride called the Nav’i River Journey. There’s also talk of the flying simulation ride and the floating mountains and another look at the animatronics.

It makes sense that Cameron and Rohde are trying to make everything so groundbreaking, as that’s exactly how Avatar was with its 3D cinematography, its immersive computer-generated settings and its performance-capture characters. There is some irony to the fact that their task is to now create physical versions of those cinematic breakthroughs.

We’ll probably get to see more of the attractions, which are a part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom park, as we near the opening, which will be sometime next summer.
