Song-and-dance man Zac Efron is eager to star in a movie adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical Memphis, but it looks like the High School Musical heartthrob is in for some stiff competition from actual Memphis native and former boy bander Justin Timberlake.
Both stars want the lead role, BroadwayWorld has revealed.
Timberlake — whose acting credits include The Bad Teacher and the upcoming Facebook drama The Social Network — will face off against Efron for the part of Huey Calhoun, a 1950s-era Memphis radio DJ played by Chad Kimball in the stage musical, produced by Bon Jovi star David Bryan.
Zac has attended the show twice in the past month, most recently this week, and is said to be wooing producers. On Tuesday, Zac was accompanied by his girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, and Adam Shankman — So You Think You Can Dance judge and the producer of Efron’s flicks Hairspray and 17 Again — as he took in a second dose of Memphis.
In the meantime, Oliver Stone is in dicussions about possibly directing the proposed film.
