Did you know that Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” was the best-selling digital song of 2010 – selling almost 4.4 million copies since its release last summer?

The announcement comes as “Firework,” the latest release featured on Perry’s Grammy-nominated Teenage Dream disc, regains the No. 1 spot on this week’s Billboard Hot 100.

It’s been a big 12 months for the quirky newlywed. Perry — who recently nabbed a guest arc on the popular CBS show How I Met Your Mother — picked up two trophies Wednesday at the People’s Choice Awards. She won the prizes for Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Online Sensation.

Of course, Katy’s chart success hasn’t done much to the recording industry from another dismal year at retailers, as Rolling Stone points out. Over the course of 2010, album sales in the United States fell 128 percent, selling 3,262 million units as opposed to 3,739 million units the year before, according to sales figures released by Nielson SoundScan
